Test Your Deck

Three simple tests to perform before you refinish your deck.

If your not sure if your deck needs another application of a waterproofing product, then use the following water test to be sure.

Water Test
Pour a small cup of water onto some of the more active areas of the desk. If the water is absorbed in less then 10 minutes or the colour of the wood darkens, then it is time to re-apply a protectant.

The following test is to check if your deck needs to be sanded or needs other preparation before you apply a stain or cleaner.

Tape Test
Using a sharp knife, cut three or four "X" in an active area of the deck. Place a piece of duct tape on each of the "X" and press down firmly. In one quick motion, remove the piece of tape. If any flakes of wood are found on the piece of tape, then it's time to either sand or apply a paint stripper to reveal a fresh layer of wood.

Not only do different wood types vary in colour, texture and absorbence so do different lots from the same lumber. This test will help you see in advance what colour your wood will be.

Colour Test
Try and determine if your lumber is all from the same lot. If some pieces are a different colour but the same type of wood, it's not going to turn out the same colour. Next you can find several hidden areas of your wood and paint them first. This will give you an idea of what colour your going to end up with. This also gives a good idea on how long it will take the stain to dry. The temperature and humidity will change the colour of the wood once stained. Try, as mush as possible, to paint the entire project on the same day to avoid discolouration in some areas.
